Microsoft Whiteboard is a smart display tool functioning as a digital whiteboard, letting users fill and manipulate the board with text, shapes, colours, erasers, cursors, stickers, and photos. Available as both a web server and online app compatible with Desktop, Android, and iOS devices, it is easy to use and accompanies the Microsoft Office enterprise. Also operating on a “freemium” basis, a free Microsoft account can be used to access Whiteboard. However, a paid Microsoft 365 account, whether under personal, business, or school, offers more beneficial features for collaboration. For copyright use, you may only copy, modify, distribute, display, license, or sell the content if you are granted explicit permission within the End-User License Agreement (EULA). Users must include the following statement: "Used with permission from Microsoft."

Advantages and Disadvantages:

Microsoft Whiteboard helps educators to create and manage virtual learning spaces to capture and discuss ideas in real-time. It allows students and educators alike to share these ideas in a seamless, well-organized manner. During my synchronous classes, I found it served as a strong collaboration platform for class discussions and allowed to foster a sense of teamwork amongst the students.

One disadvantage I found was that the tool is not ideal for asynchronous classes. In my experience, it can be difficult for instructors to distinguish who contributed what ideas on the whiteboard, and this can be confusing and frustrating for both students and teachers within large classroom settings.

Pedagogical Functions:

In Early Childhood Education, I can utilize Microsoft Whiteboard for online collaborative work within small groups. Microsoft Whiteboard would be great for a group of students that are brainstorming an assignment, where proposed ideas can be organized and shared amongst students. This is especially beneficial for the planning, brainstorming and documenting for lab-based curriculum courses.

For online instructors hosting synchronous classes, Microsoft Whiteboard could be used to improve visualization of concepts, especially for multi-step instructions. Drawing concept maps with ease enables students to brainstorm ideas efficiently and effectively. Items designed can be captured, saved and uploaded into a course shell for reference after the class. Microsoft Whiteboard is a strong communication and collaboration tool that can support concept mapping and chunking as learning strategies.

Teaching/Training Resources:

There is a great video on YouTube to help new instructors become more comfortable with the platform, and to help develop ideas for utilization.

Many educators and students have used Microsoft Whiteboard for post-secondary education. Some peer-reviewed journal articles discussing the implementation and usage of Microsoft Whiteboard in classroom environments are featured below.
